Why Sun Glare Is a Serious Driving Hazard—and What Helps
Sun glare can turn an otherwise easy drive into a surprisingly demanding few minutes. One moment you are cruising comfortably; the next, the road markings seem washed out, the car ahead becomes harder to read, and every speck on the windshield has suddenly volunteered to become highly visible.
The answer is not simply squinting harder and hoping the road changes direction. Glare is a visibility problem, so the smart response is to give your eyes better conditions, give your car more space, and recognize when sunlight has reduced the amount of information you can safely process.
Treat Low Sun Like Reduced Visibility, Not “Good Weather”
A bright, dry morning can look like ideal driving weather while still giving you poor forward visibility. AAA warns that sunlight shortly after sunrise and before sunset can shine directly into a driver's eyes, making roads, vehicles, pedestrians, and other hazards more difficult to see.
The useful mindset shift is to respond as you would to other limited-visibility conditions: reduce speed appropriately, create more following room, and stop expecting yourself to see as far ahead as you normally can. If the sun is turning traffic lights and brake lights into vague silhouettes, your comfortable sunny-day pace may no longer match the amount of roadway you can actually read.
In a driving-simulator study, low-sun glare reduced drivers' safety margin when turning across approaching traffic by an average of 0.65 seconds, and collisions were more frequent under glare conditions. The study also found considerable variation between individual drivers, which is a good reminder that “I usually handle glare fine” is not much of a safety strategy.
Clean the Inside of the Windshield, Not Just the Bug Collection Outside
A windshield can look perfectly respectable until low sunlight hits it from exactly the wrong angle. Dust, fingerprints, haze from interior materials, cleaning streaks, and other residue scatter incoming light and can make glare much more distracting; AAA specifically recommends cleaning the windshield on both sides.
This is one of my favorite pre-road-trip jobs because the improvement can be surprisingly noticeable for such an unglamorous task. Use an automotive-safe glass cleaner and clean microfiber cloth, work until the inside is genuinely streak-free, and inspect the glass when light hits it at an angle rather than declaring victory in a dim garage.
Stop Letting the Dashboard Bounce Sunlight Back at You
Glare does not always arrive directly through the windshield. Papers, glossy accessories, shiny protectants, light-colored objects, and reflective surfaces sitting on the dashboard can send additional light toward your eyes or create reflections across the glass.
AAA recommends keeping papers and other objects off the dashboard, and it has cautioned against shiny washing or waxing products that can increase distracting reflections. A good cabin setup is surprisingly simple: keep the top of the dash uncluttered and favor a clean, low-reflection surface over the “freshly polished enough to signal aircraft” look.
The same principle applies to windshield-mounted accessories. Position legal mounts, toll devices, cameras, and navigation equipment so they do not unnecessarily occupy or reflect into your primary viewing area, and always follow local laws governing windshield obstructions.
Use the Visor Strategically Instead of Driving in Permanent Squint Mode
That hinged panel above your head may be old technology, but it remains one of the most effective ways to physically block direct sunlight. AAA specifically recommends using the sun visor when driving into glare, and many visors can also swing toward the side window when the sun moves alongside you.
The clever part is adjusting your seating position before the glare gets bad. Make sure you are sitting high enough for a clear road view and that the visor actually intersects the sun from your normal driving posture; NHTSA emphasizes proper seating and clear visibility as part of managing glare and overall driving vision.
Sunglasses Help—But Choose Them for Driving, Not Just the Beach
A good pair of sunglasses can reduce bright-light discomfort, and AAA recommends polarized sunglasses for daytime sun glare. Polarization can be particularly useful for reducing reflected glare from surfaces, although some polarized lenses may make certain LCD displays appear darker or look different at particular angles, so check that you can still clearly read your dashboard and navigation display.
Keep the glasses somewhere you can reach before moving, not in a case buried in a center console that requires five seconds of archaeology at 60 mph. And retire them once daylight fades: NHTSA specifically advises against sunglasses or tinted lenses at night because they reduce the amount of light reaching your eyes.
Smart distinction: The goal is not to make everything darker. It is to maintain usable contrast so pedestrians, lane markings, vehicles, and signals remain easy to distinguish.
Watch the Road Surface for “Glare Transitions”
One of the trickiest situations is not constant glare—it is repeatedly moving between shade and strong sun. Tree-lined roads, buildings, overpasses, mountain routes, and low autumn sun can create rapid bright-dark transitions that force your eyes to keep adapting while you are also trying to track traffic.
Instead of waiting until each burst of sunlight surprises you, look farther down the road and anticipate bright sections. Ease off slightly before entering a difficult glare zone, increase your following distance, and avoid beginning a pass, complicated merge, or unprotected turn when the next few seconds of visibility are obviously going to be worse.
This becomes especially important around intersections. Research on simulated low-sun conditions found that glare reduced drivers' safety margins when judging turns across approaching vehicles, suggesting that the visual problem is not merely discomfort—it can affect how drivers judge available time.
Give Yourself a Bigger “Seeing Distance”
Following distance is usually discussed as braking space, but glare gives it another job: visibility insurance. AAA recommends leaving more room behind the vehicle ahead when driving into sunlight because reduced visibility can make it harder to see what that driver is doing.
A larger gap may also let you see more lane markings and traffic activity beyond the vehicle in front. If another driver fills that space, simply rebuild it rather than treating the gap as a reserved parking spot that someone has rudely stolen.
If visibility becomes so poor that you cannot reliably see lane boundaries, traffic signals, vehicles, or pedestrians, do not keep driving at the same pace simply because traffic around you does. Slow appropriately and, if necessary, find a safe place to stop until conditions improve.
Make Your Car Easier for Everyone Else to See
Sun glare affects the drivers around you too, which means being visible becomes part of the solution. AAA recommends using headlights during glare conditions to help other motorists see your vehicle more easily; depending on the car, manually switching on the lights may also ensure rear lamps are illuminated rather than relying solely on daytime running lights.
Keep exterior lamps clean and confirm that they are functioning properly during routine vehicle checks. You cannot control where another driver's sun visor is pointing, but you can make your vehicle a little easier to identify through the brightness.
Pit Stop!
- Clean the glass at an angle. Check the windshield from the driver's seat in bright light; streaks invisible in the garage can become spectacular at sunset.
- Move sunglasses before departure. Store them somewhere reachable without looking away from the road or digging through a console.
- Clear the dashboard. Papers, glossy accessories, and shiny surfaces may add reflections exactly when visibility is already working against you.
- Add space before the glare peaks. If the road is about to point directly toward a low sun, increase your following gap before visibility deteriorates.
- Change the timing when you can. For a familiar commute or road-trip leg, shifting departure slightly may help you avoid driving directly into sunrise or sunset on a troublesome stretch.
Don't Fight the Sun—Drive Smarter Around It
Sun glare is easy to underestimate because nothing looks particularly dangerous from outside the car. The road is dry, the sky is clear, and yet your usable view can shrink dramatically for several important seconds.
So treat glare as a change in driving conditions rather than a minor annoyance. Keep the windshield genuinely clean, remove reflective clutter, use your visor and suitable daytime sunglasses, create more space, and make yourself visible to other drivers.
A sunny road trip should still feel like a sunny road trip. The smart part is knowing when that beautiful light deserves a little extra respect.
